Do you get it? (Or not?)
Finding meaning in art can be (and is) a subjective
and personal experience.
Kind of obvious, I know…but worth mentioning.
So…
Here are some helpful ways (steps) you can take
to help you find meaning for yourself in art:
1. Observe the artwork:
Take a few moments to look at the artwork and
observe its colors, shapes, textures, lines, and
the other visual elements.
Pay attention to how the artwork makes you “feel”
and what emotions it evokes…
If any?

Maybe you don’t “feel” anything—you just find it interesting,
or colorful—or maybe even revolting.
That’s all good stuff.
2. Research the artist:
Learn about the artist who created the artwork. Read about
their background, artistic influences, and creative process.
Understanding the context in which the artwork was created
can give you insights into its meaning.
If you’re feeling like your “just not getting it”–this step can be
a big help in finding something from the art.
3. Look into the artwork’s historical and cultural context:
Think about the time period and cultural context in which the
artwork was created.
Consider how the artwork reflects the ideas, values,
and beliefs of that time–and culture.
Okay, there you go.
So if you enjoy art and are looking for better ways to understand it,
or if you simply struggle to “get it”–then I hope these tips help you
out.
Good luck!
